Creating Your Koi Garden   by Stanislaw Pena

When choosing which part of your compound to use, it is essential that you choose a space where you can enjoy your koi to the maximum, as well as a space which is easily expandable should you choose to enlarge your koi garden.

When landscaping your garden it is recommended that you use bog plants that are between 4 and12 inches tall. Although you can use aquarium plants, try to incorporate natural ones as much as possible. koi fish love to eat plants; it is important that the plants and koi coexist; another good reason for going the natural route. Floating plants are a great addition.

These are not only beautiful, but also give you less hassle when netting a koi. Since koi do not like plants in containers, you can take advantage of this and plant view-enhancing plants like papyrus. Water lilies also make excellent additions to the garden.

Lighting your koi garden adds beauty and allows you to view your fishy friends for hours after the sun sets. You can choose to do your lighting from down below or from above. When lighting from down below, the lights you purchase will come in a box with a fixture protruding from it. This design makes installation very simple. These types of lights are easy to use because the boxes are already arranged by sequence and all you have to do is lower them and plug them in! As for the bulbs, in terms of colored or clear ones, you can go for either.

However, the koi tend to be drawn to the colored ones! If you decide to illuminate your garden from above, there are many possibilities. You can use lanterns which will really light up your koi garden and even the pathways.

Accessories such as statues and benches bring more life to a koi garden. Statues should not be more than 1.2 meters in height. You can soften the look of your statues by surrounding them with plants. Gnomes are known to make great additions to the garden. You should ensure that the accessories do not overshadow the natural elements, but compliment them.

When it comes to the benches, strategic placement makes a big difference. Placing it in shaded areas is considered best for you as you will have the full view of the koi glimmering in the sun, while still avoiding direct sunlight. The bench should be comfortable and its design should compliment to garden.

Depending on your budget, you may decide to add patios and decks to bring a completely new ambiance to the garden. Decks are better because they are versatile. You could put in an overhanging deck with lights underneath it. By making the most of it, you can then comfortably watch your koi as you enjoy a delicious dinner in your koi garden.
